Crispy Ham and Cheese Bread Rolls

These golden bread rolls hide a warm ham and cheese centre under a crisp Parmesan crumb. They use everyday sandwich bread and cook in only ten minutes, making them a cheerful snack, quick lunch, or easy treat to share when something savoury sounds good.
What you'll need.
- 8 slices soft sandwich bread
- 8 thin slices ham
- 120 g sliced cheese
- 1 large egg
- 60 g breadcrumbs
- 25 g Parmesan, finely grated
- Cooking spray or a little oil
How to make it.
- Cut the crusts from the bread and flatten each slice firmly with a rolling pin.
- Place ham and cheese on each slice, then roll up tightly with the seam underneath.
- Beat the egg in a shallow bowl. Mix the breadcrumbs and Parmesan in a second bowl.
- Dip each roll in egg, then coat it evenly with the crumb mixture.
- Lightly oil the rolls and air fry at 180°C (350°F) for 10 minutes, turning halfway, until crisp and golden.
My tips.
Roll the bread firmly and place it seam-side down first so the filling stays neatly inside. For a vegetarian variation, replace the ham with roasted pepper or thinly sliced tomato.
Good to know.
Can I assemble the rolls ahead?
Yes. Keep them covered in the refrigerator for several hours and crumb them just before cooking.
Which cheese works best?
Use a cheese that melts well, such as Cheddar, Gouda, mozzarella, or Swiss cheese.
What can I serve with them?
They are lovely with tomato soup, a green salad, or a small bowl of mustard for dipping.
