Blooming Onion in the Air Fryer

A crispy golden blooming onion straight from the air fryer, with far less oil than the restaurant version. The petals pull apart beautifully and dip into a quick creamy sauce with tomato and garlic. A fun, budget-friendly snack that always gets smiles at the table.

What you'll need.

For the onion

  • 2 large onions
  • Flour
  • Paprika and salt
  • Pepper and dried garlic
  • 1 egg
  • 60 ml (2 fl oz) cream
  • Breadcrumbs

For the sauce

  • 2 tablespoons sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste
  • Pepper and dried garlic

How to make it.

  1. Peel the onions and cut them into a flower: slice down from the top in a grid, keeping the root intact, then soak in ice water so the petals open.
  2. Mix the flour with paprika, salt, pepper and dried garlic, and coat the onions well, getting the mixture between the petals.
  3. Whisk the egg with the cream and pour it over the onions, then coat them in breadcrumbs.
  4. Air fry for 20 minutes at 180°C (350°F) until golden and crisp.
  5. Stir together the sour cream, mayonnaise, tomato paste, pepper and dried garlic, and serve alongside.

My tips.

The ice water bath is what makes the onion bloom, so do not skip it. Spray the coated onion lightly with oil before cooking for an extra crunchy, evenly golden crust.

Good to know.

Can I prepare it in advance?
You can coat the onion a few hours ahead and keep it in the fridge, then air fry just before serving.

What onions work best?
Large sweet onions give the mildest flavour and the prettiest bloom.

Is it lighter than the fried version?
Much lighter: the air fryer needs only a fraction of the oil of deep frying.
